Julie A. Lambert is a master papermaker whose work transforms the ancient craft of handmade paper into richly layered, two-dimensional artworks that often resemble paintings at first glance. A graduate of SUNY Oswego with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Lambert was introduced to papermaking during her studies and has spent more than 25 years refining her techniques and exploring the relationship between material, landscape, and memory.
Nature is her enduring muse. Her work reflects both natural and human-made impacts on the environment, capturing the quiet beauty found in decay and renewal. “Nature slowly brings the cycle of life to both natural elements of the landscape and crumbling, forgotten structures… through decay emerges life,” she writes.
Her process involves dyeing, texturing, tearing, cutting, and layering individual sheets of handmade paper to create atmospheric landscapes inspired by Western New York’s scenic vistas and its slowly deteriorating industrial architecture. The influence of Georgia O’Keeffe and Monet is evident in her sensitivity to natural forms and her impressionistic treatment of light.
Lambert’s award-winning work has been exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester, NY), ROCO (Rochester, NY), MVA Gallery (Easton, PA), and GO ART! (Batavia, NY), and numerous solo and group shows across Western New York. She also teaches papermaking and offers artist talks throughout the region.
In her artist statement, she reflects:
“A quiet whispering image turns into a desire, an intuitive need… The feel of the pulp… torn, cut, layered. Slowly the creative image emerges… occasionally unyielding and frustrating… but also gentle, calming, and upon completion soothing, until the next quiet whisper.”
