Presented in cooperation with GLOW Traditions and Cooperativa Las Cazuelas

Learn how to make chicken tamales and enjoy an authentic Mexican meal with Juana Avendaño, a member of La Cooperativa Las Cazuelas (Clay Pot Cooperative). Juana will share stories of her culture and culinary tips as she leads you through mixing the masa (corn dough) and forming tamales, a staple of Mexican celebrations. The demonstration will be followed by a dinner of freshly steamed tamales, beans, spicy slaw, and agua de tamarindo, a traditional beverage. Participants will get to take home several tamales to share with friends and spread the joy of these tasty, nutritious treats.

La Cooperativa Las Cazuelas (Clay Pot Cooperative) formed in 2019 and operates out of St. Michael’s Church in Geneseo, NY. They combine the talents and traditions of entrepreneurial local women to bring the community delicious Mexican food through monthly pop-up meals and catering. Deciding to be a cooperative was a political choice. So many workers don’t have dignity and autonomy in their workplaces, among them immigrants and women. As a cooperative they are allowed to make decisions collectively. Each of their labors is viewed as equally integral to their goal – communications, planning, cooking. Without one, the others wouldn’t succeed. They join together in solidarity to meet their goals and bring you delicious food. They love to share food and stories, and make our taste of place more representative of our whole community here in the Genesee Valley.
