Artist Statement:
I never imagined that I would morph into a professional watercolor artist after leaving the elementary art classroom, but six years post-retirement, here I am. My subjects include birds (wild and companion), animals of all shapes and sizes, landscapes, and portraits. I am researching a series of paintings based on professional chefs and cooks from local restaurants. At this point, they are only value studies, but exploring and playing with the paint is the foundation of a good painting.
As a lifelong learner, I enjoy trying new techniques, such as flooding an area of cerulean with clean water to create clouds, or scraping burnt sienna and french ultramarine into shapes that look like rocks. I’m also known for “breaking the rules” in transparent watercolor, be it working on different substrates for different textures, blowing soap bubbles into fresh paint to create the bubbles along a seashore, or finishing a piece with “breaking glass” techniques.
Breaking Glass is when your finished watercolor piece is framed without glass or plexiglass. It often includes mounting the paper onto a support, and always includes varnishing. The finished product can be enjoyed without the glare or reflection that usually comes with a watercolor painting. I look forward to sharing this process with you in June. It’s time to “break some rules”, or at least the glass.
