 Mental Health Association's

 Social Club

In 2004, a few members of the Place to Be Social Club were working in a small room that had been converted for their use at the MHA.  Many were extremely interested in expanding their talents and craved the company of other artists.  The staff at the Mental Health Association worked hard to bring that enrichment to them.  Through grants and community involvement the Art Club has become more organized, given a name to their exhibit space (the Collage Gallery), received formal instruction from artists, had their work on display at local galleries, have had pieces traveling around New York State in various shows, donated art to local charity fundraisers,  and have sold several pieces.

Since its formation in 2004, the Art Club has evolved through its partnership with the MHA to become an asset to the community. Through creative expression these artists have become recognized as valuable members of the local cultural community.  The Art Club with the support of MHA epitomizes the Mental Health Association’s mission statement; to meet the needs of the community by promoting mental wellness through education, advocacy, and support, thereby improving quality of life and instilling hope.

Thanks to the 2008 GO ART! Reach Grant, Social Club members were provided with 10 weeks of art classes led by Lorie Longhany, an art teacher at Holy Family School in LeRoy. Lorie did a tremendous job.  She was very encouraging, and regardless of people's talents, was able to bring out the best in each artist, as you can see by the pieces displayed in this show.

Ruthanne Marble

BATAIVA & ALBION…Local photographer Ruthanne Marble will display her work in an exhibit that spans two counties. The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council is hosting the show at their satellite galleries at the Batavia Senior Center, 2 Bank St., Batavia and at the Albion Visitor’s Center, 120 N. Main St., Albion beginning Friday, June 13 and continuing through the end of August.
A self-taught artist, Marble received a 35mm camera in 1999 and started taking a few photos with the intent of “showing my sister that I was using her gift, and then that would be the end of it.” Today, Ms. Marble approaches her subjects “by guided intuition,” she says. “I sense where, and from what angle, to take the photo from,” she continues, adding that “Mother Nature inspires me…with the shades, colors and flow of the subject.” That subject matter can range from frigid winter scenes to wet laundry drying on a line. “I hope my pictures of everyday things cause people to pause and remember when life was slower,” Marble says.
If Mother Nature is her muse, then she also acts as Marble’s mentor as well. Marble believes that “healing is an inside job” and has taught classes at
Genesee Community College on spirituality and self-healing. She received her GED at the age of 42; by the time she turned 52, Marble became a NYS licensed massage therapist. Her keen connection with nature has given her “a natural ability to work with people.” Marble also owned and operated Dreamland Park and Supply, Repeat Performance - a consignment clothing store for women and children, and Silent Light, a metaphysical book and gift store.

Mark Weld

A resident of Middleport, NY, Mark Weld has exhibited and received awards at Cooperstown Art Assoc. Nat'l Exhibition 2007; Adirondacks Nat'l Exhibition 2007; Niagara Frontier Art Exhibit 2007; Western New York Artists Group Members Abstract Exhibition 2007; Buffalo Society of Artists Spring Exhibition 2007 Allentown Art Festival, 2nd place Water Color Abstract 2007; Clothesline Art Exhibition 2005 & 2004; Adirondacks Nat'l Exhibition 1999 & 1997.

"In my painting, movement is the main focus, then rhythm and balance. Music makes up most of my subject matter. I don't play, but I am inspired by. I try to put myself between the musicians and the sounds they play and capture that. The thought that an artist like Joni Mitchell can take a thought, pleasing or disturbing, and put both lyrics and music to it and it becomes a song, fascinates me. I think of them as pieces of art, not songs."

About 14 pieces are on view at the Shirt Factory Cafe in Medina. Stop in and see if you are inspired too! And while you're there, order a "cuppa",  relax, and enjoy the show!
