June 29 to July 2, 2012

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Richard Parrish

Price: $895.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Class Info pdf: Working in Shallow Space: Bas Relief in Kilnformed Glass

See Richard’s work on www.fusiostudio.com.  This workshop focuses on the intent and techniques that he uses for his “Mapping” work.

Bas relief is found in the art and architecture of all cultures and has existed for thousands of years. It is a kind of carving or sculpture in which the figures are raised or depressed slightly from a flat background to give a three-dimensional effect. Subtle changes in the levels of the surface and the interplay of light and shadow on the planes enable us to see and appreciate the composition.

This class explores the rich possibilities of working in relief in kilnformed glass. Simple materials such as fiber paper are used to create complex forms, shapes and textures. Intricate surface relief, texture, color and light interactions are possible in “shallow space.” The workshop will include a brief survey of the use of relief in art and architecture throughout history. Sheet glass, frit and powder are the primary glass materials used. Coldworking techniques will be used to create additional textures and to finish the work. Numerous reference samples will be made in preparation for a comprehensive final project.

Bonhams - Karl Harron

Bonhams - Karl Harron

July 31 to August 4, 2012

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Karl Harron

Price: $1075.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Workshop Details pdf:  Reaction and Interactions – Karl Harron

This 5-day artistic and technically driven, hands-on Master Class provides an opportunity for an in-depth investigation into the aesthetic possibilities offered by Bullseye Reactive Glasses.

The materials students will incorporate include Bullseye granules, powder, stringers, rods and glass sheet and the placement of the individual components will be carefully planned to fully utilize the properties of the glass. During the course participants will gain an insight into how Karl thinks and works. The reactions between different types of glass play a very important role here and the intention is for participants to get a deeper insight into how one can control, and gain from, the physical and chemical properties of glass in their work.

Interaction will be the key: discussions, Power Point presentations and technical talks will encourage and enable participants to expand their ideas, and develop a skilled, intuitive approach to kiln-formed glass. During the course, participants will become involved in several group projects to make use of the characteristics of the glass in different ways via sample tiles and will make at least one individual piece to take home.  Participants will be encouraged to consider light, surface, pattern and movement using combinations of “reactive” glass powders, frits, stringers, rods and compatible sheet to create an extensive set of samples, evolving a personal language of mark making, to culminate in the realization of a final piece.

Temple Artefact - Karl Harron

August 6-12, 2012

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Karl Harron

Price: $1145.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.  Special 3-Step molds for this process will be an extra cost of $232.55)

Workshop Details pdf: The Perfect Vessel – Karl Harron

The aim of this 7-day Master Class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work – a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique. In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deep-slumping into 3-step ceramic moulds, the beginning will be with pencil and paper, drawing from the immediate environmental stimuli surrounding The Glass Studio during a field-trip.

Students will challenge themselves further by designing a piece made up of only a single colour of Reactive Bullseye Glass sheet, either transparent or opalescent, with mark-making realized through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, powders, confetti and stringers. Students will learn finishing and cold working, and ultimately how to present the vessel form as sculpture. Discussions, power point presentations, and technical talks will encourage and enable students to expand their ideas once outside the classroom.

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Karl Harron

Price: TBA (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Workshop Details pdf:  Description Coming in April 2012

Sand casting involves the use of hot molten glass poured directly into a preformed mould.[5] It is a process similar to casting metal into a mould. The sand mould is typically prepared by using a mixture of clean sand and a small proportion of the water-absorbing clay bentonite. Bentonite acts as a binding material. In the process, a small amount of water is added to the sand-bentonite mixture and this is well mixed and sifted before addition to an open topped container. A template is prepared (typically made of wood, or a found object or even a body part such as a hand or fist) which is tightly pressed into the sand to make a clean impression. This impression then forms the mould.

The surface of the mould can be covered in coloured glass powders or frits to give a surface colour to the sand cast glass object. When the mould preparation is complete hot glass is ladled from the furnace at temperatures of about 1200 C to allow it to freely pour. The hot glass is poured directly into the mould. During the pouring process, glass or compatible objects may be placed to later give the appearance of floating in the solid glass object.[6] This very immediate and dynamic method was pioneered and perfected in the 1980s by the Swedish artist Bertil Vallien.

September 21-25, 2012

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Kari Minnick

Price: $975.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Workshop Details pdf: Collage / Montage: Focus on Frit

This class will expand on some of the processes introduced in the “Glass Onion”. While this class is a natural follow-on to its predecessor, it is power-packed on its own and has no prerequisite.

Students will be introduced to expressive and painterly kiln forming techniques using an

extensive palette of frit and powder to enable glass designs with brilliant color, rich surfaces and depth. Working with Bullseye glass, frit, powder, and multiple-firing processes, students will create pre-fired design elements to be used in subsequent glass projects, combined with other glass techniques and/or adapted to other media. Topics to be covered may include:

• realism and abstraction  • shading and contrast  • depth and layering strategies  • surface and relief texture

Students will combine these kiln forming processes in a final project.

Price: $975.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Workshop Details pdf: A Particulate Language

As toddlers, we were fearless mark makers. We knew nothing about self-consciousness and expectations… As adults, we tend to forget that the simplest of marks, when done with intelligence and commitment, become something powerful. This course empowers the timid (but optimistic) among us to draw using our native talent and life experience. Charcoal, ink and pencil sketches lead to exercises that explore a range of materials for drawing with and on glass, including powders, frit, stringers, enamels, Glassline and more.

The focus of this powerful course is toward developing and refining a skilled, intuitive and uniquely individual approach to mark making using sheet glass and powders. Simple black and white single layer studies encourage increasingly individual work and culminate in independent multi-layered monochromatic and color projects. Participants naturally expand their kiln-forming skills while acquiring a greater understanding of material, composition, line, spatial perspective, layering strategies and use of color. Experimentation with materials and strategies for invention will be encouraged and the creative process of moving from idea to concept sketches toward final resolution will be stressed.

Oatka School of Glass, 56 Harvester Avenue (second floor), Batavia

Will be taught by Amanda Simmons

Price: $1075.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Workshop Details pdf: Drop-Out Vessels & Finishing Techniques

Amanda Simmons is well known for her beautiful kilnformed and cameo-engraved glass vessels. This 5 day workshop will include and expand on techniques from our 3 day workshop.  The class will focus on the subtleties and variables of slumping kilnformed vessels and the many coldworking processes to finish the form.

We will work with pre-fired small blanks on the first day so that students will be able to start a slump on the first day to watch the process, test out the various kilns and to have a sample piece for the initial coldworking session.  Working with color in forming the vessels and designing pieces for using engraving techniques will also be covered.  After Amanda explains and demonstrates the different processes that she has worked with, students will then create a range of small to medium blanks and cameo engraving sample tiles.  Experimentation in form and color will be encouraged throughout the course.  You will finish this class with several vessels and coldworked sample tiles made using the techniques learned on the class.

Price: $975.00 USD (Includes all materials and lunch each day.)

Class Info pdf: Illuminating Glass: Vitreous Enamels on Pate de Verre

This class is designed to introduce students with some working knowledge of hollow frit casting (pate de verre) and adding vitreous enamels to the glass surface.  This class will involve mold-making, lots of cold work, as well as painting and drawing. Students do not need to be accom-plished drafts people, but familiarity with clay modeling and mold-making will be helpful.   Demonstrations and slide presentations will supplement workshop information.

Drawing will initiate the creative process.  Students will learn how to draw and paint with low fire Reusche vitreous enamels by adding their designs or imagery to simple two or three dimensional pate de verre forms.  These forms and/or vessels will be created using thin-walled pate de verre techniques.

Students will develop a working knowledge of enamels experimenting on sheet glass, first, and then apply that knowledge to a cast form.  Through multiple firings, individuals will experience the addition of color and detail through multiple firings.  Mold making techniques will be demonstrated, firing schedules discussed and hand-outs provided. Students will work with clay to make forms for mold-making.
